Day 1: Arrival in BangkokOn arrival in Bangkok you'll be picked up at the airport and transferred directly to your friendly hotel 10 minutes' walk (or 5 minutes by tuk-tuk) to the lively Khao San Road. The hotel is located right on the Chao Praya river where you can catch a river taxi to most of the sights around the city. Your room is tastefully decorated and has A/C. The hotel has a roof-top pool, so begin your trip with a refreshing dip before you venture out into the city.If you can’t wait to see the sights, head to the Royal Palace, home of the Thai king and top of the list of places to visit in Bangkok. The palace is just 10 minutes by taxi or tuk-tuk from Khao San Road. Doors are open until 3:30pm and remember to dress appropriately - knees and shoulders must be covered. |

Day 2: BangkokToday you can explore Bangkok at your own pace. One of the best ways to get around the sights of the city is by express boat. Temples, shops, pagodas and street scenes, there’s so much to see, so here’s our suggested route: first head to the Royal Palace if you didn’t get round to it yesterday. Then pop next door to the Wat Po to gaze in awe at the huge golden Reclining Buddha.Next, head to the Wat Arun temple on the Chao Praya river and then loose yourself in the dizzying frenzy of the narrow streets of Chinatown. Find a rickety seat at a street café and order a bowl of Chinese noodles as you watch the organised chaos on the streets. For a fantastic traditional Thai massage, we can recommend the massage school at Wat Po (the reclining Buddha). Try the herbal massage; after your muscles have been kneaded to a pulp you’re gently pummelled with little herbal balls. |
Day 3: Bangkok – River KwaiEarly in the morning, you'll be picked up by air-conditioned minibus with English-speaking guide and make your way to the River Kwai. You'll stop for an hour at the famous floating market before continuing on to the famous Bridge over the River Kwai where you'll go on a short train ride along a stretch of the infamous Burma Death Railway. Bag a seat on the left side of the train for the best views. You'll pass over a spectacular viaduct made from the original wooden building materials. |

|
Day 4: River Kwai - KanchanaburiAfter a night in the jungle, your two week Thailand itinerary will take you along the river by boat for the hour long ride to the Erawan Waterfalls (400 Baht, approx £8 entrance fee paid locally). The waterfall has seven different levels, dropping a total height of 1500m. You can reach the top in about 1½ hours depending on your walking speed, but you'll be duly rewarded for your efforts. Sparkling water cascading down into bright turquoise pools against a backdrop of smooth limestone rocks. You'll have three hours here, so don't forget your swimmers. At the end of the visit the guide will drop you off at your friendly hotel with pool in Kanchanburi. From here it's only a short walk to the JEATH War Museum, and also by the river the Memorial Cemetery to victims of the infamous Burma Death Railway. |
Day 5: Kanchanaburi - AyutthayaAfter breakfast you'll be picked up again at the hotel by minibus (no guide) and transferred to Ayutthaya. The transfer takes about 3 hours and your driver will drop you at your accommodation. You'll be staying in a charming bungalow with private veranda. You'll have the rest of the afternoon to relax and explore the area. This evening, we'll arrange a sunset tuk-tuk tour, which will take you around the city where you'll see the wonderful Khmer Temples illuminated by the setting sun - a really memorable part of your two week Thailand itinerary. There is no guide on this trip, so take a map and guide book if you want more information about the various sites. |

Day 6: Ayutthaya - Chiang MaiAyutthaya is a UNESCO world heritage site and in the 12th Century was one of the most powerful kingdoms in Southeast Asia, with magnificent temples and palaces covered in gold. Eventually the city lost its power and the once lavish temples and palaces fell into disrepair. Today, your two week Thailand itinerary will take you the remains of the mystical Khmer temple complexes. Wat Phra Si Samphet, Wat Mahatat and Wat Mongkol Bophit are the most famous, but you can wonder amongst other old statues and pagodas where you won't see other tourists. At the end of the day, you'll collect your bags from the hotel, and make your way to the railway station. We'll book a 2nd class couchette on the overnight train to Chiang Mai. The seats facing each other are folded down to comfortable beds. There's is also a good restaurant car serving meals, drinks and snacks. You'll be joined on the train by lots of international travellers as well as local Thai, so it's an interesting mix of people. We brought ear plugs and quickly fell asleep to the rocking motion of the train. You'll be woken an hour before arrival in Chiang Mai. |
Day 7: Arrival Chiang MaiEarly in the morning on Day 7 of your two week Thailand itinerary you'll arrive in Chiang Mai, the cultural capital of Northern Thailand. You'll be staying in a hotel with pool close to the city gates. You won't have much trouble finding something to do today. We recommend a trip to Doi Suthep, a Buddhist temple 15 km outside the city. Perched at the top of a 1600m-high mountain, it has fantastic panoramic views across Chiang Mai and the surrounding mountains. This old temple is a pilgrimage site, and once inside the walls the complex is nice and cool.In the evening stroll down to the night market, full of street food stalls serving amazing food and market traders. You'll also find Thai massage salons, restaurants and karaoke bars - plenty to keep you entertained. |
|
|
Day 8: Hiking to hill tribe villagesToday, you'll set off on a two-day trek into the mountains. You'll be returning to the same hotel at the end of the trek so you can leave most of your baggage at the hotel. Meals during the trek are included and you'll be accompanied by an English-speaking guide. You'll be picked up at your hotel by săwngthăew (a converted pick-up truck taxi) and taken to a forestry elephant training camp where elephants are trained to become professional lumberers. After about an hour, you'll climb back into the truck and head on to your Thai lunch stop. After lunch you'll continue deeper into the hills and forests. The final stretch is a 2-3 hour walk through the forests to the village of the Palong. It's a fairly easy trek along a mostly level forest trail. The women of the Palong are known for their brightly coloured traditional dress and elaborate jewellery. Tonight you'll be staying as their guest in a basic mountain hut and taking part in their local village life. |
Day 9: Elephant trekking and bamboo raftingIf you're lucky the village chickens will treat you to fresh eggs for breakfast. Later that morning you'll be going on a 1-hour elephant trek through the dense jungle, past rivers and valleys. It's amazing how these huge animals gently make their way along the steep paths. Perched high on the elephant's back you'll have some great views across the landscape, but watch out for those low-hanging branches... |

Day 10: Chiang Mai - Bangkok - Surat ThaniToday, you're free to explore Chiang Mai or relax by the pool before heading to the airport to catch your flight to Bangkok. We'll arrange the flight tickets - all you have to do is get to the airport. On arrival at Bangkok Airport, take a taxi to Hualomphong Railway Station. Make sure you allow plenty of time to get to the station; in heavy traffic it can take up to an hour from the airport. At the station you can stock up on some drinks and snacks. We'll book a couchette for you on the 7.30pm overnight train to Surat Thani in Southern Thailand. Journey time is about 11 hours so sit back, relax and enjoy. You'll be woken by the train attendant an hour before the train pulls into Surat Thani station. |
Day 11: Surat Thani - Ko SamuiThere are plenty of minibuses waiting at the station to shuttle you to the pier where you'll catch the ferry to Ko Samui, the last stop on your two week Thailand itinerary. It's a 2 1/2 hour boat trip across the Gulf of Thailand to Samui, where you'll be greeted by swaying palm trees and soft white beaches. Once you step ashore you'll be transferred to your accommodation; located on a quiet secluded bay close (but not too close) to the popular Lamai Beach. You can spend the next couple of days relaxing in your private beach bungalow, steps away from the warm blue water. The bungalow is basic but comfortable and has A/C. Take a cooling dip in the hotel pool or in the sea right outside your bungalow. If you'd prefer a few more amenities during your Samui stay (room service, bath etc.) please let us know and we'll book a more comfortable resort for you. Towards the end of the afternoon, head to the beach bar with your camera. The sunset is one of the best we have ever seen. |

Days 12 and 13: Ko SamuiThe last few days of your two week Thailand itinerary are about total relaxation, spend your time lazing by the pool, or on the beach. There are plenty of local traders selling exotic fresh fruit for a cheap and wonderful lunch, prepared on the spot! If you're looking for something more active there are plenty of excursions available. You can hire a moped and visit some other beaches on the island, or try canoeing or snorkelling. There are also plenty of diving opportunities on the island, and there are sometimes whale sharks in this area. Ko Samui has a great variety of restaurants and it goes without saying that there is an amazing selection of seafood available. After dinner, you might well see people making fire lanterns on the beach, and it's beautiful to watch them float off into the night sky. |
Day 14: Samui - Bangkok - UKIt's time to say goodbye to your island paradise today and start the journey back home after your two week Thailand itinerary. You'll arrange you're own transport to Ko Samui Airport, but we'll arrange your flight back to Bangkok, so you can connect straight onto your flight home to the UK.When to go ? You can do our two week Thailand itinerary all year round. December to the end of April is the warmest and driest time to travel, and also the most popular period. May to August is the build up to the monsoon, which means that it will probably rain from time to time, but the weather is still mostly fine and it's a little quieter. The monsoon season begins in September and lasts until the end of November. This is when it rains the most. |
