Relaxing on Railay

Railay Beach lies within the protected Phang Nga Marine Park, famous for its rock formations that thrust up dramatically from the ocean. Although technically part of the mainlaind, the sparkling beach here can only be reached by boat. It is cut off from the rest of Thailand by a ring of towering limestone rocks, making it feel like an island paradise.

It takes around an hour to get from Krabi to Railay. As you approach, you will see the entire crescent-shaped bay with its powdery golden sand. On the horizon, the rocks rise majestically from the sea in spectacular and bizarre formations. There are several resorts, restaurants, and cosy bars on the beach, giving you plenty of choice in the evenings. It's a great destination to end your Thailand trip- a final bout of beach relaxation before plunging back into reality. During this module, we offer a leisurely boat trip that weaves among uninhabited rocky islands and anchors in fantastic spots for snorkelling and swimming. We will arrange your accommodation in a charming resort on the beach, with a swimming pool of its own. An extensive breakfast buffet is included.

Day 1: Arrival on Railay Beach

The beach at Railay is surrounded by rocks, making it accessible only by boat. We will arrange your transfer to Ao Nang beach, near Railay, and back again at the end of your stay. There will be plenty of longtail boats waiting at Ao Nang to take you to Railay. You will pay the boatman yourself (about £1 per person), and then you're off. The quick trip takes only 10 minutes and speeds between the jagged rocks dotted with caves and birds' nests.

You will arrive on the enchanted western beach at Railay. This is, without a doubt, the most beautiful beach in the area. You will stay in a comfortable resort on the beach, with its own swimming pool. The charming bungalows are all set within beautiful gardens with hibiscus, ivy, and bromeliads growing right up to the front door. Once you have settled in, you can begin the task of completely unwinding. Start by taking a quick dip in the crystal clear waters.

Day 2: Railay Beach

Today, you can wake up to a delicious buffet of tropical fruit and a breathtaking view of the fairytale bay. Bliss. After breakfast, you can either choose to stretch out on the beach or take a boat excursion to the craggy islets and limestone rocks jutting out of the sea. The boat stops at spots of incredible natural beauty, with plenty of opportunities for swimming or snorkelling. When you reach the famous lagoon at Ko Hong, don't miss the chance to jump out for a refreshing dip. If you look beneath you, you will see literally hundreds of starfish strewn along the seabed. A Thai lunch will be served under some shady palm trees. The lunch is included in the price of the excursion. You'll be back at your bungalow by about 5pm- the perfect time to enjoy a cocktail as you watch the spectacular sunset. As the temperature cools a little, you can play some evening football on the beach with the locals.

Day 3: Departure from Railay Beach

This module ends after breakfast. Those who are concluding their Thailand journey here can return by plane to Bangkok from Krabi. If you have some time for more relaxation in the south, then you can choose the Raya Coral Island or the Hidden Paradise module. You can also extend your stay with a further few nights here or on Ko Lanta, Ko Phi Phi or Phuket. Click here for a map of Thailand.

Eating and drinking: There are several good restaurants on Railay beach for atmospheric evening meals. They all serve a wide range of Thai and vegetarian food. If you've had enough of rice, or can't face another noodle, western meals are also available. It is a very cosy and romantic destination. There are a few bars, but don't expect a wild nightlife at Railay.

Shops/cash points: There are a few small shops on Railay for basic supplies. There is one ATM, and a few massage salons. For just £1, you can have a full massage or a pedicure.
