Orphanage Charity Project - Child Care CentreThailand Travel Plan supports an orphanage for Burmese children who have lost their parents. This orphanage is known as the C.C.C. which is short for Child Care Centre. It is located in a refugee camp about 40 km from the town of Mae Hong Son, and about 300 km from Chiang Mai. An estimated 20,000 people live in this refugee camp. The orphanage was set up by Meredith Nunu. She herself fled to Thailand in 1995, and has lived in this camp ever since then. She first worked for a number of years as a nurse, but gradually took over caring for a growing number of orphans whose parents have been killed by the Burmese army. This orphanage has grown to become the Child Care Centre and is currently home to 44 children. |

The refugee camp lies close to the Thailand / Burma border. The refugees in this camp come from Burma and mostly belong to the Karenni, an ethnic minority from Kayah State in Burma. The majority of the camp's inhabitants fled to Thailand in the second half of the 1990s. In the conflict that has raged for decades between the Burmese government and the minority groups living in the border regions of Burma, as usual it is the civil population that suffers. In Kayah State the Karenni people are persecuted, whole villages are forced to move, ordinary people are used as forced labour and so on. This has led to a large-scale exodus of the Karenni people to Thailand, the dislocation of society, and families being torn apart in Kayah State. |

The orphanage cares for and raises the children, as well as sending them to school. From our donations Meredith buys food to feed the children, and employs two people to cook for the children, do the laundry and other household tasks. Any money that is left over goes towards buying clothes, things for school and other essentials. |
