Ko Raya

Raya coral island

Ever wanted to finish that book? You know, the one you started ages ago but can't find the time to finish? Why not do it on a tiny island, hidden from the rest of the world? Ko Raya is the perfect place to catch up on some reading and soak up the sun. It is an amazing coral island just south of Phuket, with quiet beaches and gently swaying palm trees. There is very little do here- and that is precisely its selling point. It's a great place to unwind, completely uninterrupted by reality.

If you're staying in Phuket, you'll be picked up from the pier and taken by speedboat to Ko Raya (approx. 45 minutes). You will spend 3 nights in a comfortable wooden bungalow with breakfast included. The little bay that lies right outside your bungalow door is like a tropical aquarium - only much bigger. You'll be awestruck by the fantastic underwater world that thrives beneath the calm waters. This is an ideal place to take an introductory scuba dive, or a PADI diving course to get your open water qualification. Your transportation back to Phuket is also included in the quoted price.

Day 1: Arrival on Ko Raya

Today, you will be picked up from your hotel in Phuket by minibus and taken to the pier. The speedboat for Ko Raya leaves at 9am (8:15am in low season) and takes about 45 minutes. Your bungalows on Ko Raya island stand on a hill with panoramic views of the sea. Once you’ve settled in, you can begin to relax. Head to the beach for some well-deserved laziness- reading and snoozing in the sun.

The best snorkelling area lies off the beach right outside your door, and rented snorkels cost next to nothing. The restaurant within your resort offers a wide range of tasty dishes, so you barely need to move to grab a delicious bite to eat. In the evening, over a cocktail or two, you can discuss your discoveries in the underwater world. If you feel like taking your snorkelling to the next level, walk down to the dive school near the beach and ask about the various courses available. They will be more than happy to help.

Diving in Ko Raya

Day 2: Ko Raya

You can start the day with a refreshing dip in the warm, turquoise sea. Early mornings are the perfect time to find a kaleidoscope of exotic fish swimming in the bay. Breakfast will taste all the better after your energetic underwater excursion. It takes about 10 minutes to walk to the slightly bigger Batok Beach, with its sparkling white sandy beach. This is what you call a real 'bounty beach'- an discovered paradise. Another great beach is Siam Beach, another 10-minute walk away. There are a few beach bars here, and you can also get a massage at a reasonable price. Walking along the sandy paths, you might come across another walker or two, but there is no traffic here- only the sounds of natural island life.

Day 3: Ko Raya

You have all day to relax on the beach today. Lounge around on your balcony, by the pool, or on a beach lounger in the sun. Read the last few chapters of that book whilst sipping fresh fruit juice. Treat yourself to a banana pancake on the beach.

Maybe today is the day to try an introductory scuba dive? With the guidance of a divemaster instructor you'll try a real scuba dive in the wonderful waters. The visibility in the waters off the island is excellent (about 25m). If you wish to take a full course and get your PADI diving certificate, we can extend your stay on Ko Raya.

Day 4: Departure from Ko Raya

After breakfast, you will leave your footprints in the sand for the last time and return to Phuket. The boat departs Ko Raya at around 15:00-16:00 during November to April, and 12:00-13:00 between May to October.

Phuket is an excellent base from which to start the next part of your journey. Or if your time has run out, Phuket airport has good flight connections to Bangkok, making it possible to Bangkok and just connect onto your main flights home.

Warning: You must not fly within 24 hours of your last dive!

If you have more time, you can also visit some of the other islands in South Thailand, with modules such as Hidden paradise or Paradise islands of the Trang archipelago.

If you're craving some adventure after a few lazy days, go for the Giant Trees and Lakes in the Khao Sok National Park.
