Ko Hai island

Paradise islands of the Trang archipelago

Just off the coast in Southern Thailand, far away from mainland bustle, lies the magical Trang Archipelago. This archipelago consists of more than 47 tiny islands. Each island is a little slice of island paradise. Ko Ngai, (also called Ko Hai), is famed as the most idyllic island of South Thailand. Daydream on the bleached white sands under swaying palm trees and take a dip in the turquoise waters. There is a small diving centre on the island, where you can take an introductory dive or book a few individual dives. On Ko Muuk, the second island featured in the module, you can swim straight from the beaches to the offshore coral reefs. Only a few short strokes and you'll find yourself in a wonderful, technicolour underwater world. Ko Muuk is also famous for its mystical Emerald Cave- a mysterious 80m-long limestone tunnel leading to a dazzling emerald lagoon.

Day 1: Arrival Trang - Ko Hai

You can arrive in Trang by overnight sleeper train or by plane. If you arrive by train, you will be collected from the station and brought to the pier. From the pier, you'll catch the ferry (included) for the quick 40 minute trip to incredible Ko Hai, the first island in this module. Here, you will stay in luxuriously comfortable bungalows on the beach. Each of these is constructed in a charming Thai style with its own patio, where you can enjoy the peace as you look out over the clear blue waters. The bungalows lie directly on a beautiful long beach, and just offshore you can swim among the underwater coral gardens.

Day 2: Ko Hai

Today, you can grab a snorkel and discover the amazing underwater world. As the islands of the Trang archipelago are far from the tourist trail, the coral here is totally unspoilt and vividly coloured. If you’ve never snorkelled before, you’ll be amazed at the beauty you'll see just under the surface. The rainbow myriads of exotic fish and the stillness of their underwater wonderland make this an absolutely unforgettable experience. The water temperature is around 27°C. Please wear plenty of sunscreen, especially when snorkelling.

Day 3: Ko Hai - Ko Muuk

Today you'll travel by boat to the next island on the agenda- Ko Muuk. This is another tiny tropical paradise of golden sands, emerald greenery and azure waters. You'll stay here at the Charlie Beach Resort, which consists of sevral small bungalows on a beach that stretch that is 200m long. There's plenty time to relax on the beach or take a stroll through the island village.

Alternatively, you can follow in the footsteps of a near forgotten people- the sea nomads. In bygone days, the sea nomads were the largest group of people in this region. They earned their living by harvesting and selling valuable swallow nests found locally in the hidden lagoons. They still collect the nests today, using exactly the same fishing and boat building techniques. They spend less time at sea these days, and can be found in the villages. It is fascinating to hear about their heritage.

Day 4: Ko Muuk

While staying on Ko Muuk, you can arrange a boat trip to the spectacular Emerald Cave. In your longtail boat, you'll pass through a limestone tunnel that is an incredible 80m long, or, if you're feeling energetic, you can choose to swim instead. At the end of the tunnel you will emerge into a silent, emerald green lagoon with a magically mysterious atmosphere. The boat will then bring you back to Ko Muuk for a few more sun-soaked hours on the beach.

Day 5: Departure from Ko Muuk

This module will end today. After a leisurely breakfast, you will arrange your return to the mainland near Trang by ferry. From the pier, it is only a short taxi or bus ride into the centre of Trang.

Many travellers wrap up their Thailand holiday with this module and fly back to Bangkok from Trang. If you would prefer to head back to the capital overland, we can arrange the overnight sleeper train back (second class with air-conditioning is approx £25).

This module can only be booked between November and the end of May. If you are looking to escape to an island paradise at other times of the year, the Raya Coral Island module is a good alternative. In the southeast, we offer also good island-hopping combinations to the livelier islands of Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao.
