Relaxing on Robinson Crusoe island

Route: Trang - Ko Hai

Just off the coast in Southern Thailand, far away from mainland bustle, lies the magical Trang Archipelago and Ko Hai Island. The archipelago is made up of of more than 47 tiny islands, each one a little slice of island paradise. Ko Hai Island, (also called Ko Ngai) is ideal if you're looking to stay in beach huts in Thailand. It is also famed as the most idyllic island of South Thailand. Daydream on the bleached white sands under swaying palm trees and dive into the clear turquoise waters.

There's a small diving centre on the island where you can take an introductory dive or book a few individual dives. You'll stay in charming Thailand beach huts with your very own private veranda. Watch the sunset with a cold beer or fruit cocktail, it's the perfect place for a bit of tropical R&R. All you'll need is a good book, a snorkel and you're all set.

Day 1: Arrival Trang - Ko Hai Island

You'll arrive in Trang either by overnight sleeper train or by plane. If you're coming by train, you'll be picked up from the station and transferred to the pier just outside Trang where you'll take the ferry to Ko Hai Island (ferry included). The crossing takes about 40 minutes. On Ko Hai Island you'll stay in charming, comfortable beach huts in traditional Thai style. The beach huts have their own private veranda. These beach huts in Thailand are beautifully located near a long, wideswept beach, one of the few places on the island where you can swim straight out onto the coral reefs.

Day 2 and 3: Ko Hai Island

This morning, you can rent a snorkel at the restaurant and spend the day discovering the amazing underwater world. The islands of the Trang archipelago haven't been discovered by mass tourism yet, which means the coral here is largely intact and unspoilt. If you’ve never snorkelled before, you’ll be amazed at the spectacular marine life just below the waters around Ko Hai Island. Swimming among the brightly coloured fish in such peaceful surroundings is a really great experience. The water temperature is around 27°C. The sun is extremely bright, so make sure you use plenty of sunscreen and you might want to wear a t-shirt in the water to protect your back.

Day 4: Ko Hai Island - departure

Today, it's time to say goodbye to your little tropical paradise as you buy your ticket and board the ferry back to the pier on the mainland, where your Ko Hai beach hut trip ends.  From here you can catch the bus or take a taxi back to Trang. Many travellers plan this module at the end of their Thailand trip, in which case you can take a domestic flight, or the overnight train (2nd class with A/C, approx £30) back to Bangkok, and depending on your flight time, catch your connecting flight back home.

If you'd like a few more days of island idyll, we can always extend your stay on Ko Hai Island for a few extra nights in those incredible beach huts in Thailand. Just ask our Travel Specialists for more information.
